John Armleder is one of Switzerland's most important contemporary artists and has worked for more than thirty years, starting off in the 1960s as a performance artist in the Fluxus inspired Geneva group Ecart (French for diversion). Ch arles Thomson was born in 1953 in Romford, suburb of London. He went to Brentwood School in Essex and was a classmate of Douglas 'Hitchiker' Adams. He was the only person in ten years not to get the painting degree at Maidstone College of Art. In 1979, he was a member of the Medway Poets performance group, which included Billy Childish. Tracey Emin was part of this circle. In 1982 he gave up art and from 1987-99 he was a full-time poet with work in over 100 (mainly children's) anthologies. In 1997 he took up painting again. Two years later he founded the Stuckists art group with Billy Childish to promote figurative painting and oppose conceptual art.
